Ocean Scene (in a gallery!!!!)
Y’all!
My ocean scene (below) was accepted into a Flat File exhibit at the A.P.E Gallery in downtown Northampton, MA! Check it out at the Gallery December 6th - 18th 2021. Available for sale online through December 2022. Opening reception will take place December 10th 5-8pm. Come say hi!
I’m so grateful to get to participate in this program and it’s a treat that it’s right in my backyard.
Today I’m sharing more ocean scenes, and the story of how I got to them.
When I made this piece it was mid July and the rain had not let up in two weeks. I remember biking to the river to see how bad the river flow was, trying to predict when I could row safely again. Every day the water was brown, fast, and covered in eddies that would spin my boat right into a bridge if I tried. And rain was predicted for another week. I couldn’t help but feel like summers didn’t used to feel like this, and grew anxious about how much worse everything would get.
So I tried to channel it into art. I intended on a birds eye view of a shoreline to depict erosion (it was originally portrait). But as I struggled to perfect the waves crashing into the shore, I turned my IPad 90 degrees and realized it was an underwater scene. I leant into that and literally went from a place of climate anxiety, to appreciation.
Hearing the news from the A.P.E. Gallery inspired me to reconnect with that appreciation. I looked at Ocean Scene and remembered the day my brother, Seth, brought me into his shed to share a gorgeous music video he just finished editing. You can watch it below. Performance by Gabriel Forestieri.
The video (and Seth’s song) has so much to do with one’s relationship to water. I was reminded that my relationship to water is what drove me to sit down and make an Ocean Scene in the first place.
Now I have these:
